Chinese hackberry is a deciduous tree with small oval leaves and fine twigs. It responds well to constant trimming and pinching making it an ideal species for bonsai but it can grow much larger. The flowers which appear in spring are small and insignificant but the bright orange fruit is extremely attractive and unique among deciduous bonsai species. It can grow into a bright green shade tree up to 40′ in full sun.
