Coreopsis grandiflora ‘Early Sunrise’ is a compact coreopsis growing 18″ to 24″ tall by 8″ to 12″ wide. It features solitary yellow daisy-like semi-double flowers up to 2 diameter. The flowers have yellow rays and darker yellow center disks. Slender erect flower stems rise to 18″ tall. Flowers typically bloom from late spring to late summer and depending on the area sometimes well into fall. Bloom period can be much shorter if the spent flowers are not regularly deadheaded. Coreopsis can be an aggressive “self-seeder” and it tends to sprawl particularly if grown in moist and/or fertile soils. Crown rot may occur if grown in moist poorly drained soils. Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ is effective in borders but also in naturalized areas meadows prairies or cottage gardens. It’s a fairly good plant for areas with poor dry soils.
