Equisetum hyemale (Scouring Rush) is a common spreading rush a reed-like evergreen perennial that grows to 3 ft tall. The plant stems are cylindrical hollow jointed and about 1/3 inch in diameter. They have rough ridges. The tiny leaves are joined together around the stem forming a narrow black-green band or sheath at each joint. Like other ferns and their relatives this “scouring” rush does not produce flowers or seeds.
