Escallonia rubra is an upright compact shrub growing 6 ft. to 15 ft. tall and wide. The leaves are smooth and glossy dark-green. Escallonia rubra produces red or crimson flowers in 1- to 3-in. clusters. It is often used as screen or hedge especially near coast. The glossy dark foliage contrasts nicely with the rosy-red flowers. Escallonia rubra is quite wind-resistant and thrives in seaside conditions. They can be somewhat drought-tolerant but they do best with watering. Inland climates are hotter and so escallonia rubra should be better suited to partial shade. Escallonia rubra does not tolerate alkaline soils very well.
