Magnolia Soulangeana is occasionally called the Saucer magnolia.  It is a deciduous hybrid magnolia grown as a small tree to about 20 to 25 feet tall.   Saucer magnolia has a somewhat rounded crown.  It is also often grown multi-trunked in a shrub-like form.  Magnolia Soulangeana produces fragrant saucer-shaped flowers that appear in early spring before the foliage.  The flowers are usually white and flushed with purple on the outside.  Additional flowers may bloom sporadically during summer.

Magnolia Soulangeana flowers have been known to give way to cone-like fruits in late summer.  They releasing individual  at maturity. The foliage turns yellow to brown in fall.  Saucer Magnolia is considered to be one of the most popular deciduous magnolias.
