Mahonia repens often called Creeping Mahonia is an evergreen shrub with a low spreading growth form.  It displays bright yellow flowers that are followed by blue-black clusters of small fruit.  Mahonia repens is suitable as a large scale groundcover but is also used as an accent plant in small shrub groupings.  It is quite a versatile plant and can be used to control erosion as well.

The dense prickly growth of Mahonia repens can be a good edging material easing the transition from sidewalks or paving to a shade garden. Mahonia repens is naturally drought tolerant.  Mahonia repens is sometimes called creeping hollygrape.  It typically grows to 1 foot tall.  The compound leaves are holly-like with oval leaflets. This foliage turns a purplish color in the cold of winter.  The clusters of berries are known to be sour but they are edible and can even be used in jellies.
