Pinus nigra is commonly known as Austrian Pine or European Black Pine. It grows best in deep moist well-drained soils in full sun. Pinus nigra tolerates drought conditions once it is established. Another positive attribute is that it also tolerates clay soils a common problem in many Southern California gardens. Pinus nigra is usually tolerant of most urban garden conditions.
Austrian Pine is a medium to large size pine. Pinus nigra slowly grows up to 40 to 60 feet tall with a pyramidal shape. The upper tree crown rounds out and spreads as the tree ages. Older trees are usually quite attractive with dense branching. Austrian Pine has many uses: as a specimen tree to screen a particular or as a windbreak that can be effective against Santa Ana Winds.
