Prosopis chilensis otherwise known as a Chilean Mesquite tree is an excellent garden choice for providing light filtered shade.  Prosopis chilensis has an open airy crown and it can have a dramatic effect when planted alone.  In larger landscapes it can be planted in small “groves” to make outdoor patios and porches less vulnerable to summer heat.   Prosopis chilensis is semi-evergreen.  The planting area and its winter cold patterns will determine this to some extent.

It is necessary to follow a regular watering schedule while Prosopis chilensis establishes a deep root system. Irrigation can be significantly reduced after it is established.

Some plants that are often seen planted as companions in the garden with Prosopis chilensis are most any bright dry land perennial like Salvia Furman’s Red or the smaller Leucophyllum frutescens Compactum.  Convolvulus mauritanicus makes a nice choice as well as some Passiflora and red Bougainvillea like ‘Barbara Karst’ La Jolla or San Diego Red.
