Coast Live Oak

Moderate-growing evergreen tree with a spreading growth-habit to 30-60’ tall x 40-70’ wide. This vigorous and stately-looking California native species develops a large picturesque trunk and branching structure with age, with massive limbs spreading out to create a large canopy of prickly, holy-like deep-green foliage. Adding further interest are the narrow-shaped ¾-1 ¼“ long acorns that emerge a shiny bright-green in the fall, to eventually mature to a light-brown color. It should be noted that this species can develop large surface roots that can lift or damage concrete, and is susceptible to Sudden Oak Death, a pathogen that has in recent years claimed a number of these trees in the northern and central regions of California. Despite these drawbacks, this highly attractive species continues to be a valuable and greatly admired part of the western landscape. Best-suited to parks or large open areas that can accommodate its large size and potential surface rooting nature. Avoid planting anything under the canopy of this tree, as the water required to maintain this vegetation is not conducive to its overall growth and success. Tolerates heat, drought, and a variety of soil types provided they’re fast-draining. Thrives in a full sun exposure.
