Category:

Slow to moderate-growing evergreen tree to 40-60’ tall x 30-50’ wide. This attractive heat and drought tolerant species forms a rounded crown of leathery, deep-green leaves with fuzzy light-gray undersides, and is admired for its deeply fissured creamy-white bark exhibiting reddish-colored furrows with age. This bark is used commercially in the production of cork. It is fairly common for this species to replace some of its foliage in spring, so some spring leaf drop is to be expected. Inconspicuous spring flowers are followed by ¾ – 1 ½“ egg-shaped acorns that age to brown in the fall and winter. Well-suited to warmer climates including intermediate to low desert ranges, this attractive species is useful for park settings or large open areas where its fairy dense foliage makes it a good shade tree. Tolerates a variety of soil types but performs best in an acidic well-drained soil, and prefers a full sun exposure with infrequent summer watering.

USDA Zone: 7A-11
