Plant Type

Cactus

Moderate-growing evergreen cactus to 2-3’ tall x 4-5’ wide. This non-trunk-forming species forms rounded, dark-green pads to 6” wide, dotted with numerous yellowish-colored bristles that look soft to the touch, but should be left undisturbed as they easily embed into the skin and can be difficult to remove. Older specimens produce creamy-yellow flowers that attract pollinators in early-summer, with flowers giving way to 1-2” long globe-shaped fruit that mature to a purplish-red. Well-suited for cactus or succulent gardens, makes a fine container specimen, and can also be grown as a house plant for strong light, low traffic areas. Tolerates drought and a variety of different soil types, though a fast-draining soil is essential for this species to thrive. Prefers a full sun exposure. Deer resistant.
