Cercidium Floridum has blue-green bark that is smooth on younger branches becoming more grayish as trees mature. This gives color to the graceful trunks and divided branches while providing a dark green backdrop for the intense yellow spring flowers. Flowers first appear in early spring and may persist into early summer. In mature vigorous specimens the flowers literally cover the leaf canopy creating masses of yellow in the landscapes that have this tree. The canopy is made up of finely-divided branches armed with small thorns and compound leaves. Blue Palo Verde is native to the American southwest and northern Mexico and is found from sea level to 4000 ft. elevations. This species is highly adapted to desert conditions tolerating high summer temperatures.
