Western Redbud is a native seen on slopes in coast ranges and in the Sierra foothills to an altitude 4500′. Cercis occidentalis likes full sun exposure. Occasional summer water promotes faster growth. Cercis occidentalis is tolerant of clay soils. Flowers and young pods are edible. The flowers usually emerge before the leaves.
