Category:

Moderate-growing deciduous shrub with a spreading growth-habit to 3’ tall x 5’ wide. Chaenomeles have long been admired for their durability and spectacular flower display. One of the earliest spring bloomers, this attractive variety forms a spreading mound of glossy, bright-green foliage that provides an outstanding contrast to the vivid, brilliant-red flowers that appear in early-spring, often before or during the emergence of its attractive foliage. Flowers are followed by small, showy, greenish-yellow fruit that are edible and provide a good food source for various species of birds. This tough, adaptable variety tolerates a variety of soil types (provided they’re well-drained) and can grow in moist or dry conditions, though a more robust-looking specimen is achieved with moderate, regular watering. Well-suited in beds and borders, as a slope or hillside planting, or as a background to lower-growing shrubs and perennials. Thrives in a full to partial sun exposure.
