Cornus sericea ‘Isanti’ is a redtwig dogwood with a rapid-growing multi-stemmed habit. This deciduous shrub grows to a maximum size of 4-5′ tall with a rounded spreading shape. It is more dense and compact than other cornus species due mostly to having shorter internodes. An outstanding ornamental feature of Cornus s. Isanti is bright red winter stems. Tiny white flowers appear in clusters in late spring with sparse intermittent additional flowering sometimes continuing into summer. Fruit is quite attractive to birds. The fruit has as much ornamental interest as the flowers. The dark green leaves turn an attractive reddish purple in autumn.Cornus s. Isanti is effective in large plantings in moist soils where the plants are allowed to spread and form thickets. They are also effective as a property line screen. Also effective in shrub borders where the plants can be combined with yellowtwig dogwoods for an interesting bicolor stem display.
