Slow-growing evergreen tree fern eventually reaching 15’ tall, forming a canopy to 10’ wide with age. Requiring many years to reach maturity, this hardy species forms a slender, furry, reddish-brown trunk topped with gracefully-arching fronds of finely-cut, deep-green foliage that emerges from tight, snail-like spirals. This lush foliage emerges bright-green, eventually developing a light-sheen as it matures to deep-green, which stands out nicely against its rough-textured, dark-colored trunk. Great for lending a tropical feel to shady areas, this handsome species is well-suited as an accent or focal point in the landscape, in atriums or planted in large containers. Slower growth is to be expected when planted in containers. Requires an evenly moist, well-drained soil, and thrives in a partial shade to filtered sun exposure. To aid in keeping this species hydrated during hotter weather, both trunk and soil surface can be watered, but avoid overhead watering of foliage as it can promote disease.
