Elaeagnus pungens ‘Variegata’ is a large sprawling evergreen shrub that can grow up to 15 feet wide tall and wide. ‘Variegata’ can be kept more compact and tidy if it is pruned. Elaeagnus pungens ‘Variegata’ is fast growing presenting dark green leaves with silvery brown spots on the underside of the leaf. The stems of elaeagnus pungens can develop long thorns. The stems and thorns are both covered with brown scales. The flowers are fragrant but inconspicuous. They bloom in late fall but are often hidden among the leaves. In mid to late spring small fruits appear turning red later with maturity. Elaeagnus pungens ‘Variegata’ is quite tolerant of different soil conditions but as a fast grower it requires frequent pruning. It is often used in plantings along highways or freeways because it is useful in erosion control it can be hedged and it presents well as a natural barrier.
