Eremophila maculata ‘Ruby Fire’ belongs to a large diverse group of plants varying from flat groundcovers compact shrubs and graceful shrubs to flowery weeping trees. ‘Ruby Fire’ as the name implies displays brilliant red tubular flowers. Leaf color in eremophilas can vary. Some flowers are surrounded by colorful bracts that make them appear to be double flowers.Eremophila is derived from two Greek words eremos meaning desert or lonely places and philos meaning to love. Eremophila means desert loving. Some common names include Emu Bush because it was erroneously believed the flowers are eaten by emu in the wild and the seeds spread in that manner. They are not. Eremophila are well suited to semi-arid to arid regions. Despite the fact that very few of the species are eaten by emus the name has stuck.
