Fatsia japonica (Japanese Aralia) grows aggressively and with up to 12 in. wide leaves that are deeply lobed and slightly serrated. The leaf stems are quite long and hold the leaves up and out while the plant grows 5-8 ft. tall and wide. The upright stems are covered with prominent leaf scars and they are mostly un-branched. The sheer weight of the large leaves causes the plant to lean or list to one side or another. The flowering season is in fall but only mature plants will bloom. Flowers are white and are on a white stalk growing in small terminal clusters. They are followed by small fleshy black fruit. This plant is mainly grown for its outstandingly attractive foliage and not the flowers.
