Moderately fast-growing shrub to 3-4’ tall x 5-7’ wide. This free-blooming, low-maintenance species is native to the Channel Islands of California, and forms a loose mound of bright-green foliage contrasted with showy clusters of snapdragon-like, deep-red flowers that appear at the tips of the foliage late-spring through fall. A magnet for hummingbirds. Well-suited in native gardens, in mixed shrub borders, or as a soil stabilizing slope planting, and takes well to shearing to help promote a more compact form. Tolerates coastal conditions and poor soil (provided it’s fast-draining), and while this species can survive with little water in mild coastal climates, it requires moderate watering in warmer inland areas. Thrives in a full sun to partial shade exposure.
