There are over 300 species of geraniums. True geraniums or sometimes known as cranesbill are not the common geranium. The common ones are pelargoniums. Geraniums are grown in almost any soil as long as it is not constantly wet. Geraniums do best in full sun but they will tolerate some shade. The leaves tend to be rounded and are usually fragrant. Some have unique textures colors and markings as well. Early summer to fall flowers may be range from lilac to plum purple. Geraniums are long-lived and do not require a lot of care. They go well in a perennial border and are used as a ground cover as well.
