Lagerstroemia x. ‘Zuni’ Purple is one of the hybrid special introductions in the Lagerstroemia family. It features larger dark lavender flower trusses has improved cold tolerance and has a handsome “peeling” type bark. There is excellent fall foliage color that goes from orange-red to maroon.
Zuni is slightly larger than other lagerstroemia. It makes a great small tree for city gardens. It can be used as a single-trunk standard tree or with multiple trunks for a broader canopy that supports a greater number of flowers.
The deciduous crepe myrtle is among the longest blooming trees. Flowering periods last from 60 to as much 120 days. The trees grow 9-12 ft tall by 8-10 ft wide. Leaves on most crepe myrtle are alternate and smooth. The leaf size depends on the variety but the flowers are produced in big clusters. Depending on the variety crepe myrtles grow as large shrubs or as trees.
