Category:

Fast-growing evergreen perennial shrub to 4-6’ tall x 4-5’ wide. This attractive and popular species features upright stems of narrow serrated dark-green foliage that has a pungent scent when crushed. Eye-catching whorls of fuzzy tubular bright-orange flowers appear on the branch tips late-spring through fall attracting butterflies hummingbirds and bees. Prune yearly after flowering to promote a more dense-growing specimen. For colder climates this species is hardy to about 20° F where it will freeze but is likely to regenerate new foliage from its base in spring. Well-suited as an accent or backdrop to lower-growing annuals and perennials. Requires a well-drained soil and while this species has low water needs once established a more lush-looking plant is achieved with a regular watering schedule. Thrives in a full to partial sun exposure.
