Mexican Fan Palm Washingtonia robusta

Fast-growing, tropical evergreen palm to 80-100’ tall, forming a 10-15’ wide crown with age. A standout in the skyline, this highly-popular, vigorous-growing species has long-been revered for its toughness and durability. A single, slender, towering trunk is topped with large, glossy, fan-shaped, 3-4’ wide deep-green fronds that lend a tropical appearance to any setting. The lower-growing fronds of this species will naturally die out creating a skirt of brown-colored fronds that can persist for many years. These are most commonly removed to maintain a tidy appearance. Large, branched clusters of tiny, cream-colored flowers appear in summer, followed by small black fruit. This is a very large palm, so be sure to select a location that can accommodate its impressive stature. Tolerates heat, pollution, poor soils, coastal conditions and periods of drought, though a more robust looking specimen is achieved with regular watering. Thrives in a full sun exposure.
