Plant Type

Grass-like, Shrub

Moderate-growing, semi-evergreen clumping grass to 2’ tall and wide. Semi-evergreen in mild climates, this low-growing species forms a vase-shaped clump of medium-green foliage accented with dark-brownish-purple flower panicles that rise above the foliage in late-summer and fall. Well-suited as an accent or texture contrast to broadleaf shrubs and perennials, and is great for planting in mass to help control soil erosion. Tolerates a wide variety of soil types (provided they’re well-drained) and though this species can survive on little water once established, a more robust specimen is achieved with regular watering. Pruning to about 6” tall in late-winter to early-spring will help promote a strong re-emergence of spring foliage. Thrives in a full to partial sun exposure.
