Moderate-growing evergreen cactus to 2-3’ tall x 4-5’ wide. This non-trunk-forming species forms rounded, dark-green pads to 6” wide, dotted with numerous red-colored bristles that look soft to the touch, but should be left undisturbed as they easily embed into the skin, can be difficult to remove and can cause considerable skin irritation. Older specimens produce creamy-yellow flowers that attract pollinators in early-summer, with flowers giving way to 1-2” long globe-shaped fruit that mature to a purplish-red. Well-suited for cactus or succulent gardens, makes a fine container specimen, and can also be grown as a house plant for strong light, low traffic areas. Tolerates drought and a variety of different soil types, though a fast-draining soil is essential for this species to thrive. Prefers a full sun exposure. Deer resistant.
