Fast to moderate-growing deciduous tree to 15-30’ tall and wide. Initially very-fast-growing in youth this tough species eventually slows in growth-rate to form a picturesque spreading canopy of thorned branches cloaked in finely-cut bright green foliage. Abundant clusters of fragrant showy bright-yellow flowers with orange-red throat markings appear primarily in summer with intermittent bloom throughout the year. Flowers are followed by 3-5” long bean-like seed pods that mature to a tan color. Adding further appeal is the attractive smooth yellowish-green branches and trunk. With age the trunk eventually becomes rougher in texture and matures in color to a light gray. While able to tolerate regular watering this heat-loving species can easily survive periods of drought and is especially well-suited to desert climates. Admired for its ability to tolerate poor soils it should be noted that this species can be invasive which should be considered when choosing a planting location. Thrives in well-drained soil with a full sun exposure.
