Moderate-growing evergreen perennial to 1-2 tall and wide. This long-time garden favorite features narrow, lance-shaped dark-green foliage, and is prized for its eye-catching display of trumpet-shaped, garnet-red flowers with red-striped throat markings. Blooms rise above the attractive foliage intermittently from late-spring to fall, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Blooms nearly year-round in coastal gardens, and removing the old blooms as they expire will help promote re-blooming. Well-suited in cottage gardens, woodland settings, beds, borders and edgings, and makes a great container specimen. This species requires a well-drained soil to thrive, and while it can survive relatively dry conditions in coastal climates, it prefers regular watering in warmer areas. Tolerates a full sun exposure in coastal gardens, and prefers partial sun to partial shade elsewhere.
