Canary Island Date Palm

Large, slow-growing evergreen palm to 50-60’ tall, forming a canopy of fronds to 40’ wide. Slow-growing in youth, this bold species eventually speeds up in growth-rate to form a broad trunk topped with long, gracefully arching medium-green fronds armed with sharp leaf spikes at the base of their fronds. Older specimens are often seen with trunks that resemble a giant pineapple, as the fronds have been cut close to the trunk to create a diamond pattern of old leaf bases. Its slow initial growth-rate allows this species to be grown in containers for many years, but this is a large, vigorous species that requires some space in the landscape. Homeowners in residential areas often plant this species too close to building structures where it eventually overpowers the area. It should also be noted that this species has roots that can be aggressive in the right situation, so caution should be exercised in choosing a planting location. Tolerates heat, wind and a variety of soil types provided they’re well-drained. Prefers a full sun exposure.
