Polystichum polyblepharum is mistakenly called holly fern. Japanese Tassel Fern or Japanese Lace Fern is an evergreen fern that is native to Japan and southern Korea. It features shiny bipinnate dark green fronds (1-2 ft. long) with finely divided but overlapping pinnae. It grows in an outward-spreading vase-shaped clump to 24” tall and 24” wide. Newly emerging fronds unfurl thus the common name tassel fern. Tassels disappear as fronds flatten with maturity. Polystichyum comes from the Greek words polus (many) and stichos (row or file) in reference to the rows located along the veins of the fronds.
