Prunus americana is commonly called American Plum. It is a species of prunus that is native to North America and specifically to Missouri. American Plum is a small deciduous single trunk tree or multi-stemmed shrub. Grown as a tree it usually reaches 15 to 25 feet tall. It grows with a large spreading canopy. When grown as a shrub it spreads and can grow into large plant groupings. The flowers are unpleasantly aromatic and they appear in March before the foliage grows out. The flowers are followed by round red plums that arte about an inch in diameter. The fruit has bright yellow pulp. They ripen in early summer.
Prunus Americana is usually grown for its ornamental value. The plums right off the tree have somewhat poor quality and thus these fruits are usually used for preserves and jellies. Prunus Americana bBranches and twigs are an attractive dark reddish-brown.
