Moderate-growing deciduous tree or large shrub to 20-30’ tall x 18-25’ wide. This North American native grows naturally with a bushy, suckering growth habit to form a dense thicket. Suckering growth can be removed to help encourage more vigorous-growing main trunks. Slightly-glossy, ovate, deep-green leaves are accented with showy, fragrant white flower clusters that appear in spring, followed by small red to black berries that mature in summer and fall. Adding further appeal to this hardy species is the showy bright-red to yellow foliage tones that appear in the cool of fall. Prefers regular watering in a well-drained soil and thrives in a full sun exposure. The leaves and fruit of this species can be poisonous to livestock which should be considered when choosing a planting location.
