Quercus coccinea sometimes called the Scarlet Oak is in the red oak family. Scarlet Oak can be mistaken for pin oak black oak and occasionally even the red oak. Scarlet oak is a large tree with a rounded open growing habit. Scarlet Oakmatures to over 70 feet tall. The foliage is glossy green in the summer and it turns to an attractive scarlet color in fall. As with most quercus the fruit is an acorn.
Quercus coccineais a long-living and durable tree. Scarlet oak is a stately shade tree for most lawns providing excellent fall color. Quercus coccineais also considered to be a good street tree but it must be planted in a location allowing sufficient space to grow and spread.
