Category:

Moderate to fast-growing, evergreen to partially deciduous tree reaching 40-60’ tall x 70-80’ wide with age. Can be fully deciduous in cold climates. This long-lived Southeastern US native is among the broadest-growing of the oaks, and forms a heavy-limbed crown of attractive glossy deep-green leaves with whitish-colored undersides. Inconspicuous spring flowers are followed by 1” long acorns that exhibit a strong spine at their tip. This attractive, adaptable species tolerates heat, humidity and wind and grows in a variety of climates, from cooler regions (hardy to 10° F) to low and intermediate desert areas (if provided regular watering). Though capable of tolerating some aridity, this species performs best in a deep, rich, moist soil and is well-suited in park settings or large open areas. Also makes a good lawn tree for warm interior valleys or low-desert areas. Prefers regular watering in a full sun exposure.
