Moderate-growing evergreen shrub with a rounded growth-habit to 4’ tall and wide. Indian Hawthorn has long been a popular landscape favorite revered for its durability and dependable flower display. This floriferous variety features broad lightly-glossy dark-green foliage and is accented with abundant clusters of lightly-fragrant bright-pink flowers appearing late-spring into early-summer attracting bees. Following flowering appear small berry-like dark-blue fruit though they are mostly inconspicuous. Well-suited in mixed borders as an accent mass planting low-growing hedge or foundation planting and does well in containers. This species is drought tolerant but looks best with a light regular watering schedule. Prefers a well-drained soil in a full to partial sun exposure. Best flowering and growth-habit will occur in a full sun exposure.
Rhaphiolepis I. Jack Evans is also called Indian Jack Evans Hawthorn or more formally Rhaphiolepis Indica “Jack Evans”. Jack Evans are grown for their dark leathery leaves and long late-blooming flowers. These popular evergreen shrubs become drought-tolerant once established. Their flowers range from white to deep pink and they bloom from late fall to late spring. Following are small purple or black fruits. New growth leaves on these low-growing shrubs tend to turn a bronze or even a burgundy color. They can reach 6 to 8 feet or more but are mostly used as informal hedges background plantings low screens and even as container plants. They are profuse bloomers and fragrant.
