Moderate-growing evergreen shrub typically growing to 5-10’ tall and wide, or greater with age. Coastal plantings tend to be more compact and stay below 4’ tall. This tough, drought tolerant California native forms a dense rounded mound of leathery, aromatic, medium to deep-green leaves accented with clusters of creamy-white to rosy-pink flowers that appear in early-spring. Flowers are followed by tight clusters of reddish-colored fruit that taste of bitter lemon and can be used to flavor water as you would with lemons. Well-suited as a specimen, hedge or mass planting, and is especially useful for stabilizing slopes or ocean bluffs. Requires very little water once established, and thrives in fast-draining soil with a full sun to partial shade exposure.
