Ribes alpinum is a small deciduous shrub native to central and northern Europe. It is typically confined to growth at higher altitudes reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and about 4 feet wide.  It grows with an upright dense shape. The bark is initially smooth and light grey.  Later it becomes brownish in color and starts to flake off almost like exfoliating bark. The flower buds are light green to white. The leaves are dark green with scattered hair while the bottom of the leaves is light green. Flowers are organized in clusters in the corners of the leaves. Individual flowers are small and greenish-yellow.
