Moderate to fast-growing deciduous shrub to 6-12’ tall x 5-8’ wide. This North America native features arching stems of lush, maple-like foliage that emerges bright-green, turning a rich, emerald-green in summer, to eventually develop warm shades of red in the cool of fall. Drooping 1-3” long clusters of fragrant, rose to ruby-red-colored flowers appear in early-spring, often before the emergence of its attractive foliage. A favorite for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Flowers are followed by showy, dark-purple fruit that mature in summer and are used for various culinary purposes. These fruit are a magnet for songbirds. Ideally suited for woodland gardens or as a background to lower-growing shrubs and perennials. This vigorous species is capable of surviving with little water once well-established, though a more robust-growing specimen is achieved with moderate watering. Prefers a well-drained soil and thrives in a partial sun to filtered shade exposure. Tolerates full sun in coastal climates.
