Brazilian Pepper Tree

Moderate-growing evergreen tree to 25-30’ tall and wide. This durable species can be grown as a single or multi-trunk specimen and forms a rounded, umbrella-like crown of pinnately compound deep-green leaves that have a pungent odor when crushed.  Creamy-yellow flowers appear in late-summer and are followed by abundant clusters of showy red fruit that persist through fall and winter. The dried fruit of this species are edible and are sold in stores as pink peppercorns. It should be noted that this species can self-sow in moist soils and the fruit litter can be extensive which should be considered when choosing a planting location. Well-suited as a shade, patio, courtyard or street tree. Tolerates heat, smog and a variety of different soil types, and while this species is capable of surviving periods of drought, it performs best with moderate watering in a full sun exposure.
