Moderate-growing multi-stemmed evergreen shrub typically growing to 4-6’ tall and wide or greater with age. This southwestern-native species forms a rounded mound of stiff gray-green foliage and produces inconspicuous chartreuse-colored flowers in early-spring followed by brown nutlike fruit that has a high oil content and is commonly used in the commercial production of oils soaps and skin products. Both male and female plants are needed for fruit production. Tolerates heat sun and drought and is well-suited for arid or desert landscapes where it is often grown as a clipped hedge foundation or background planting. Requires a fast-draining soil and prefers a full sun exposure. A more robust-looking plant is achieved when given supplemental summer watering.
