Moderate to fast-growing evergreen shrub with an upright growth habit to 5-8’ tall x 4-7’ wide. This popular species features attractive, velvety, oval-shaped, rich-green leaves covered with fine hairs that give the plant a silvery sheen, especially prominent when illuminated in bright light. Prized for its eye-catching display of vibrant, purplish-blue flowers that stand out especially well against its 15-18” long, red-colored flower stems that rise above the attractive foliage summer into fall. Adding further appeal to this attractive species is its lovely fall foliage display, turning shades of bright orange in the cool of fall. Well-suited as an accent, hedge or screen, as well as making a fine container specimen. Prune occasionally in fall to promote a more compact, denser-growing plant. Thrives with regular watering in rich, well-drained soil in a full sun to partial shade exposure, but needs some protection from hot afternoon sun in warmer inland climates.
