Quercus lobata is commonly known as Valley Oak.  This deciduous majestic oak can be seen in many fertile valleys throughout California.  Valley Oaks are long lived often reaching 100 feet with trunk diameters of 5 to 6 feet.  Several hundred years old is not unusual. Quercus Lobata becomes large and picturesque with long drooping branches and beautiful thick checked bark. It grows best in deep fertile soils where it has room to develop an extensive root system.  Quercus Lobata is excellent for wildlife producing abundant acorns.  Oaks are also some of the best trees for birds including acorn woodpeckers and other bird species that utilize them for nest sites.
